A man accused of raping and sodomising his former common-law wife was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against the man, who is 36, is that on June 21, at a hotel, he sexually penetrated the 23-year-old woman. On the same day also, he is also alleged to have sodomised her.
The father of one was not required to plead to the indictable charges when they were read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who presided over his arraignment.
The case was called in-camera (to the exclusion of the public) because of the nature of the charges.
The prosecution’s case is that on the day in question, the virtual complainant was in her room at a city hotel with her four-year-old son when she heard a knocking at the door. Upon checking, she saw the accused standing at the door.
It is alleged that the man then entered the room and picked up a knife which was on a ledge and threatened the woman, whom he ordered to undress.
The prosecutor stated that the woman refused to comply with the man’s order and as a result he dealt her two slaps, pushed her on the bed, pulled down her pants and underwear and had sexual intercourse with her.
After that, the court was told that the accused ordered the woman to turn over. After refusing to do this as well, the prosecutor said that he turned her over and sodomised her.
