Michael `Pimsy’ Vieira on Monday looped and smashed his way to titles when the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) staged its multi-category Veterans tournament at the National Gymnasium.
Former three-time national men’s singles champion Colin France was easily the most outstanding veteran on show copping two titles.
The tournament saw competition in the 40 years and over, 45 years and over, 50 years and over, 55 years and over and 60 years and over categories and attracted a large turn out.
Vieira played unbeaten to win the 60-years-and-over category whipping Muniram Persaud 3-1, Brentnol Richards (Berbice) 3-0 and Howard James (Linden) 3-0.
Persaud copped second place while Richards got the better of James for third.
Vieira also reached the final of the 55-years-and-over category but found the combination bat of the wily veteran France too much to overcome and lost 11-9,9-11,8-11,11-6,11-4 (3-2). Third place went to Patrick Triumph who thrashed Persaud 3-0.
In the semi-finals France defeated Persaud 3-1 and Vieira edged Triumph 3-2.
In the 50-years-and-over category France won his second title when he defeated Triumph in the final winning 11-4, 11-9, 11-5 (3-0). Third place went to Xen Goliath who defeated Ray `Copter’ Anderson 3-1.
In the semi-finals France defeated Goliath 3-0 while Triumph defeated Anderson 3-1. Goliath won the 45-years-and-over category defeating Remy Taitt 11-6,11-6, 4-11, 11-6. Third place went to Richard Bacchus of Berbice who defeated his colleague Floyd Conway of Berbice 9-11,7-11,13-11,12-10 and 11-9. In the 40-years-and-over category, Taitt gained revenge over Goliath coming from two games down to triumph 8-11,8-11,11-6,11-7,11-8.Third place went to Triumph who gained a walkover from Conway.
