Queen’s College carted off two titles to be the most outstanding school when the Business School sponsored tournament ended on Monday at the National Gymnasium.
Spearheaded by national U-15 player Shemar Britton and national U-18 player, Sachin Panday, Queen’s College won those two categories on their way to dethroning Bishop’s High School as the champion school.
The other titles were won by Mae’s and North Georgetown Primary.
Mae’s won the 13 years and under division while North Georgetown carted off the 11 years and under category.
At the presentation ceremony which followed, Director of Sports, Neil Kumar, thanked the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) for its continuous efforts to develop the racquet sport.
Kumar also thanked the parents and students from the schools for recognizing how important sport is in their lives.
He also lauded owner of the Business School, James `Jimmy’ Bovell, for sponsoring the tournament and congratulated all the competitors for their efforts.
Bovell, in his remarks, thanked the GTTA for putting together such a well-organized event.
Bovell, whose brother Dino was one of the country’s top players, revealed that he grew up playing table tennis and said he was happy to help develop the sport.
According to the former bank manager, he was happy about the level of competition he saw in this year’s tournament. The tournament served as preparation for a number of players who are preparing to compete in the seventh Pre-Cadet and Caribbean Table Tennis Championship in Jamaica later in this month.
Among them are Tyriq Saunders, Nevaeh Clarkston, Jamaali Homer, Priscilla Greaves, Kristie Lopes
Kyle Edghill, Elishaba Johnson, Miguel Wong, Rajiv Muneshwer, Niron Bissu, Abigail Martin, and Jeremey Singh.
The tournament attracted over 50 entries and 135 players from 18 schools.
