SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the son of Test star Shivnarine Chanderpaul, gathered a half-century as Guyana beat Barbados in the second round of the WICB Under-17 Championship here yesterday.
The left-hander stroked 56, more than half of Guyana’s final total as they reached 93 for eight after the match was reduced to 30 overs because of rain at Louis D’or.
Chad Williams was Barbados’ best bowler with two for 28.
Joshua Drakes then hit a top score of 28 but Barbados came up short, undermined by Guyana’s spin attack.
Leg-spinner Steven Sankar claimed four for 17 while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie chipped in with two for 11.
At Bon Accord, the son of former Test opener Stuart Williams, Saeed Williams, also hit a half-century in a losing cause for Leeward Islands against Jamaica.
Williams got 54 to help the Leewards to 124 for five off 20 overs, after they were sent in. Jamaica then cruised to their target off just 14.2 overs and for the loss of two wickets, thanks to Triston Coleman’s unbeaten 77.
At Shaw Park, Brian Christmas’s 53 saw hosts Trinidad and Tobago to a 63-run victory over Windward Islands, in the only match were the full quota of overs was possible.
Sent in, T&T tallied 169 for seven with Camilio Carimbocas stroking 27, Tion Webster, 20 not out, while Taryck Gabriel claimed three for 32.
In reply, the Windwards were dismissed for 106 off 41.1 overs with Gidron Pope top-scoring with 29.
