A group of miners operating in hinterland locations yesterday presented the Guyana Police Force with four Honda All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to be used to combat crime in the interior areas.
Addressing the forum at the TSU Drill Square, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary on behalf of the donators, miner Ryan Perreira said that the decision to present these vehicles was taken after discussions with the E&F Division Commander, Clifton Hicken. He noted that it was realised that these vehicles were much needed and as a result, a handful of miners settled on purchasing the ATVs, which cost $3M each.
“We are always in cooperation with them for any assistance they need to further support the interior locations,” he noted.
Police Commissioner (AG) Leroy Brumell, in his address, thanked the miners and assured them that the vehicles would be maintained and will be well taken care of.
“It is quite gracious of you to donate these ATVs to us… We are all aware of what the interior locations look like and in order to fight crime we got to have the adequate vehicles,” he noted.
Brumell lauded Hicken for the work he has done so far, pointing out that almost 30 firearms have been seized since the beginning of this year. In congratulating the E&F Commander, Brumell said he is happy to help in mobilising police in the interior area.
Apart from Perreira, other miners responsible for the donation were identified as Chunilall Baboolall, Takur, Rocky Rasul, and Mr. Ramnarine from Bartica. Efforts made to obtain the full names of the miners proved futile as this newspaper was told by officers within the Police Public Relations Department that a note had not been made.
