Bartica Secondary School student Daryl Joseph placed first in the inaugural one-day Malta Supreme Rapid Chess tournament held on Sunday last at the Bartica Secondary School.
The fifth form science student edged past his nearest rival, teacher Julia Do Campo of Three Miles Secondary who came in second. Yusuf Hinds, also of Bartica was third.
The Guyana Chess Federation, in collaboration with Headmistress of Bartica Secondary, Sharon Chow-Chee, specially organized and conducted the one-day event for Bartica chess players.
The round-robin competition took place during inclement weather, which was no threat to the indoor event. All of the participants were presented with chess sets as prizes for practice and future competitions.
Banks DIH sponsored the competition under the Malta Supreme brand and the company’s Communications Manager, Troy Peters, extended congratulations to all the players for participating in the tournament, on behalf of the company. He also recognized the outstanding performance of Joseph.
He urged the Guyana Chess Federation to continue its crusade to take the sport around Guyana and pledged his company’s continued support.
President of the Guyana Chess Federation Shiv Nandalall extended heartfelt thanks for the sponsorship under Malta Supreme; and to the headmistress and the regional administration for making the tournament possible.
It was noted that plans are in the making for an ‘Introduction to Chess’ workshop in Bartica, which would target an estimated 50 students and teachers during the upcoming annual school vacation.
The players are optimistic about future tournaments at Bartica.
