Inmates of the National Veterans’ Rest Home in Lamaha Springs will benefit from the Ministry of Health on site monthly medical clinic for ex-military veterans.
Veterans will benefit from on-the-spot health services such as hypertension and diabetes testing, while dental and eye care will be provided shortly, the ministry stated in a press release. Services will be available on the first Wednesday of every month and will be extended to residents in the community as well.
The clinic is part of the ministry’s mandate to provide free health care services to Guyanese near and far the release added. Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Trevor Thomas stated that the initiative reflects access to health services and quality health, two important components of the ministry. He also mentioned that the move to collaborate with the administration of the veterans’ rest home is to provide service to members who have served the country well.
The release also quoted Thomas as saying “the provision of this service will ensure that access to health care becomes easier as the inmates will not be require to go to the hospital as the service will be taken to them.”
Meanwhile, Coordinator of Indigenous People’s Community, Michael Gouveia said that the regional health services within the Ministry of Health is tasked with ensuring that the service is provided to the patients on time and that they are well equipped to carry out the functions which will see persons benefiting from quality health care as qualified doctors, medics and pharmacists will be on the spot to tend to them. He said, “for the veterans who have served Guyana well, this is just the government’s way for giving back.”
Administrator of the veterans’ home, Margaret Rose Arthur, lauded the government for the initiative and stated that the service was necessary and the ministry was the first to offer such service to the veterans.
