More than a dozen persons were injured last night when the city bound minibus they were travelling in slammed into a truck which was parked on the Lusignan public road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Up to press time last night, the occupants of the bus were still being treated for various injuries including broken limbs, a dislocated hip and lacerations to the head and other parts of the body.
Among the injured was a nurse attacked to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Hospital whose name was given only as Sister Hoodith of Melanie, ECD; Sunildat Singh, 37, of Strathspey, ECD; Loretta Wilson, 20, of Leguan; Kevin Barnwell, 17, of South Haslington, ECD; Quincy Daniels, 18, of Annandale; Texiwayne Burgess; Kevin Balram; Mohipa Mohan, 25, of East Bank Demerara; Glendon Grandison; Allias English and Chetwyn Barrow.
Scores of relatives converged on the emergency unit of the hospital as news of the accident which occurred just after 8 pm, spread. The injured arrived at the institution in a number of vehicles including an ambulance and a police car.
An injured Mohan told this newspaper as he waited his turn to enter the treatment room that he was gaffing with a friend who was travelling in the bus when “all I heard is a breaks and slamming.”
The truck driver said that he ended up underneath a seat in the bus. He said that he was on his way to Georgetown and had not long before left his worksite located in Mahaica.
Mohan described how the bus slammed into “a big canter” which was parked on the roadway. He noted that the vehicle was carrying a full load and at the time of the accident, the driver was speeding.
“Every single body” in the bus, he observed, sustained injuries as a result of the collision. His own injuries included a broken hand.
Stabroek News was later told that the front of the bus was badly damaged.
