St. Ignatius has once again made the Rupununi area proud this time with their advancement to the quarter finals of the Digicel Schools Football tournament.
St. Ignatius will now play Georgetown in the quarter finals.
In front of a crowd of more than three hundred, St. Ignatius defeated Region 5 champions Bush Lot 2-1 yesterday at the St Ignatius Community Centre ground.
Scoring for St. Ignatius were Frankie Parks and Mark Joseph in the second and 15th minutes respectively while Bush Lot’s lone goal came via a penalty kick which was converted by Kyron Lynch in the 50th minute.
St. Ignatius Coach Terrence Parks said that his players were somewhat scared of their opponent.
“I expected more goals but they lost the opportunity but maybe next time it will be different.”
According to Parks, his players in both games did not perform to the best of their abilities, but said with a few more days to go they should a little better.
“Well the team is a bit afraid of their opponents but as we go ahead we are gaining more experience and will keep pressing forward.”
Parks said that his expectations of his players is that they return to the Rupununi with the championship trophy, but said if that does not happen he still has time to make them into one of the best teams.
Noel August, Coach/Teacher of Bush Lot Secondary said that his players are not by any means disappointed with the outcome of the match.
“They were happy for the challenge and we hope to come better next time because we will be training better next time.”
August said his team had close to two weeks to prepare for the competition and that was because a few of the players were preparing to write the CSEC examinations.
He vowed that the team will be better prepared next year.
He also gave reasons for his team’s defeat.
“We lapsed and that caused us the game, but it was a nice game and I enjoyed it and the better team won.”
Brian Rodrigues, Vice President of the Rupununi Football Association in an invited comment said that he was happy with the opportunity that the students have been given.
He said the tournament has given them an opportunity to scout for new players from which they can put together a youth team which they will be taking to Brazil in a few months to compete in a youth tournament with their Brazilian counterparts.
Meanwhile, Waramadong Secondary earned a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Region One champions Santa Rosa 4-2 in Kamarang.
Waramadong Secondary will next play Tutorial High School of Region Six while
Christianburg Secondary of Region 10 will play Charity Secondary of Region Two in the quarter-finals.
