Local speed ace Mark Vieira powered his V power Mazda RX 8 to two Group 4 victories to reign over rival Andrew King at the GMRSC race meet yesterday at the South Dakota Circuit.
After King piloted his Mazda RX 7 to claim the first Group 4 race,Vieira steered his machine to claim the second Group 4 event to set up a highly anticipated grand finale which was easily won by Vieira after King pulled out after five laps due to mechanical problems.
Vieira and Irfaan Kalamadeen placed second and third respectively in the first event of the Group 4 category while King and Mark’s brother Paul Vieira were second and third respectively in the second event.
Paul Vieira was also the second in the third Group 4 race followed by Ryan Rahaman.
In an invited comment Mark Vieira noted that he had a “good day” at the track and that he was looking forward to the meets in Barbados in September as well as the Caribbean Race of Champions at the South Dakota Circuit in November.
“Today was a good day the car worked reasonably well. We had some problems with the computer and some rain on Friday but I think race after race the car keeps getting better. Two wins and a second I will take that any time,” he said.
“The next meet for me will be in Barbados on September 1 and I am looking forward to that as well as November, I think once we understand the car and how it works we will be fine,” Vieira assured.
King told this publication that his car’s faulty gear box was the cause for him pulling out of the last Group 4 race but said he plans to have it upgraded and turbo charged in time for November.
“Today we figured we had everything covered we were in a good position to probably win all three races but the gear box in the car has consistently given me trouble over the years. When I bought it I thought it was state of the art stuff but overtime maintenance it has been failing. I will have to upgrade the gear box run in Barbados (in September) and try to turbo charge in time for November.”
Meanwhile, Chet Singh and Stanley Ming Jr. drove unbeaten in their respective categories.
Singh won all three of the Group 2A races while Ming Jr. won all three of the Go Kart events relegating his father to runner up spots.
In the 125cc Motorcycle events Heeranand Boodhram won two out of the three races while the other race went to Andy Rajkarran.
Sayad Hassan took the top honours in two of the three Group 2B races while Afraz Alli drove off with the other event.
