Elite unit brought in to protect T&T DPP

(Trinidad Guardian) Security has been increased around Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard after he reportedly received death threats last week. Officers of the Multi-Operational Police Squad, considered to be one of this country’s elite units, have been assigned to protect Gaspard.

When contacted by the T&T Guardian on Monday afternoon Gaspard  would neither confirm nor deny the threats and declined to comment. Gaspard has been involved in a number of high-profile matters and has been leading the prosecution’s case in court as well. On Monday he appeared in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court and it was evident that security around him has been beefed up.

Gaspard was escorted to court by Multi-Operational Police Squad officers dressed in plain clothes. They remained in the courtroom with him until the matter was heard and later accompanied him to his vehicle. As he left the courtroom, the officers formed a shield around him.

He was then taken by an unmarked car that was surrounded by a convoy of unmarked police vehicles with armed tactical officers. Police sources are tight-lipped on the nature of the threat.
