The Guyana Karate College (GKC), led by 10-year-old Aliyah Wong, copped second placed at the 2012 International Karate Daigaku Shoto Camp and World Cup Karate Tournament in Toronto, Canada On Sunday.
The team won 24 gold medals which earned them second place behind the Ontario side which captured 33 gold medals for first place. Trinidad and Tobago with 23 gol;d medals placed third.
Guyana ended with a total of 45 medals after adding four silver and 17 bronze to their gold madal tally.
Wong, the young karate sensation, was Guyana’s success story.
She turned in a phenomenal performance copping five gold medals after winning every event in her category.
According to a release the GKC, led by Senior Instructor and Vice Chairman, Sixth Degree Black Belt Sensei Jeffrey Wong, was particularly proud of the achievements at its inaugural World Cup especially since the team was a very young one with the exception of two seniors who have had previous experience at the Caribbean and Pan American tournaments.
The first IKD International Daigaku Cup, which was held from July 7-8, saw delegations from all over the globe competing in both Kata and Kumite events.
It resulted in a series of exciting matches with a demonstration of the physicality and mental toughness that are characteristic of karate practitioners.
