A policeman allegedly stabbed another in the region of his right shoulder and under his left ribcage and he was placed in police custody while the stabbed off duty rank was up to last night being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Burton Carmichael, a sergeant in the Guyana Police Force was attacked yesterday sometime between 19:30 hours and 20:00 hours on the bridge to his Sophia home.
The man’s wife Felicity Benjamin related the events as they had occurred. She said that the wife of the alleged assailant in her reputed husband’s stabbing brandished a cutlass preventing her from leaving her home as she sought to get Carmichael to hospital for treatment.
“I fall in a doze and after I fall in a doze I hear a knocking on the door. I jumped up. He came in and gave [some grocery items that I had asked him to purchase]. Turning back now to go in the bedroom all I hear is this man holler ‘Tiny pass me car keys. I just got stabbed’,” she said, explaining that her nickname is ‘Tiny’.
“I run inside to get a slipper to put on my foot. When I going outside again there is [the assailant’s wife] attacking me with a cutlass. So I run back inside and start hollering,” Benjamin related. “My two daughters were sleeping and they woke up when they heard me hollering,” she said. “I had to wait until she move off the bridge,” she said.
Commenting on his condition up to that time, she said that when she went in the doctors said she should allow him to rest and that he should not talk. Police ranks at the hospital last night confirmed that the suspected assailant in the stabbing had been in custody at the Kitty Police Station. Ranks were seen taking statements from Benjamin and other persons who had accompanied the stabbed man to the hospital.
