Police last evening arrested two men and a woman after they intervened in an argument between the two men at Stevedore Housing Scheme.
The woman was arrested after she began screaming while the police were firing shots in the area.
According to reports reaching this newspaper sometime around 8:30 pm two men were arguing in the street when approximately seven police ranks on motorcycles approached them. One of the men attempted to run resulting in ranks opening fire on them.
Around ten shots were fired however, no injuries were reported.
Eyewitnesses say that after the ranks opened fire, the woman, Shayanti (only name given), began screaming for her nephew who was on the road at the time.
“When this woman start cussing up and screaming fuh she nephew the Police run in pon she and them ransack she house and then them lock she up,” a resident told this newspaper.
When Stabroek News arrived on the scene the police already had the two men in their van under the seats and were trying to get the woman into the van. However, the woman was insisting that a female officer arrest her but she was later overcome by the force of the male officers who placed her and a child, believed to be her nephew, in the front seat of the vehicle and sped away.
This action by the police sparked outrage amongst the residents present there and they demanded that a female officer arrest Shayanti but they were threatened by several ranks that if they did not shut up they would also be arrested.
The threats did not deter some vocal women who said that they are fed up with the actions of the Police in the area.
The females noted that this is not the first instance whereby the police charged into the area and opened fire.
A resident, who asked not to be named, said “We fed up with this nonsense the Police getting on with, they just come in this place and believe it is a ghetto and start shooting up every time and then they pick up a couple boys and carry them to the court and say they thief or they got drugs.”
The woman added that they are concerned about the future generation since the police seem to be targeting them.
“We are calling on the human rights people to look into this matter and let them come and see how the police treat us like dogs in this place,” she added.
