The Annual Ballot Box Martyrs 55-mile cycle road race is set to pedal off on Sunday in Berbice, commencing at 09:00hrs in front of Freedom House in New Amsterdam.
According to a press release, the race is being organized by National Cycling Coach, Hassan Mohamed and is sponsored by sports enthusiast Chris Jagdeo of Corentyne in memory of the Ballot Box Martyrs.
The senior and junior riders will proceed to Corriverton Police Station before returning to No. 63 Village for the finish, while the veterans, upright, and female cyclists will finish on the upward journey at No.63 Village.
The first six senior finishers, the first three juniors, veterans, and upright cyclists will each receive prizes. The first two females and the first veteran over-60-years rider will also receive prizes. Eight prime prizes will be up for grabs during the course of the race.
Last year’s senior winner was Warren ‘40’ McKay in two hours, 14 minutes and three seconds. Berbicians Neil Reece and Marica Dick also took the top honours last year in the junior and the female categories respectively. Seeban Fernandes won the veteran category while Richard Charles rode off with the upright first place trophy. Walter Isaacs was last year’s top over-60-years rider.
Transportation for cyclists and officials will leave at 05:00h on Sunday from the National Sports Commission office at 91 Middle Street, South Cummingsburg.
