A man who was reported to police for allegedly threatening his sister was yesterday arraigned on weapons charges after police accused him of having an unlicensed gun and ammunition in his possession when they found him.
George Greene, 27, was arraigned on charges that on July 10, at Georgetown, he was in unlawful possession of a 9mm pistol and 47 live rounds of 9mm ammunition and six live rounds of 12 gauge cartridges, for which he did not have licences. Greene was also charged with displaying threatening behaviour on the same day towards his sister, Shondell Evans, resulting in a breach of the peace. The father of three, of Lot 29 North East La Penitence, appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he denied the charges when they were read to him.
Advancing special circumstances in a bail application for his client, attorney James Bond said it was an “undisputed fact” that the alleged firearm and ammunition were found while his client was in custody. According to him, police later took the items to the station and said to his client, “look wah we find, this is you own.” At this point, Bond said, Greene was beaten by the lawmen to sign a confession statement. He said that his client was severely beaten by police and while he could have been taken to court on Wednesday or Thursday, the police deliberately kept him to allow his wounds to heal.
Bond, who claimed that gun and ammunition were found in an alleyway, said that Greene had no knowledge of the items nor did he have possession or control over them.
As relates the threatening behaviour charge, Bond asserted that his client made no threat to anyone. According to him, Greene was engaged in a discussion with his sister, [the virtual complaint in that matter].
Meanwhile, police prosecutor Sergeant Alexis David-Hosannah objected to the attorney’s bail application, saying that the police’s facts were different from that of the defence.
According to David-Hosannah, Greene was found standing with an orange bag in his hand, in which the gun and ammunition were found. She added that it was acting on information the police received from Evans relating to the threatening behaviour complaint that later led them to the find of the items after they went to Greene’s home. Afterward, Greene was informed by the court that he would be remanded to prison
The matter will be called again on July 26 for reports and fixtures.
