Andre Lopes was among the winners on Thusrday’s opening night of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Open lawn tennis tournament Thursday evening at the GBTI Recreational Centre Bel Air.
Following a brief opening ceremony, Lopes, Oswin Coggins, Benedict Sukra and Viraj Jugdeo, all advanced to the next stage of the men’s singles.
Lopes won in straight sets, against Dillon Pyle winning 6-0, 6-0.Coggins dropped the first set to Kester Abrams 4-6 but rebounded to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 while Sukra warded off a determined fight from novice Nomenchandra Persaud to win 6 – 4, 6 – 4.
Jugdeo then beat Mindat Lallbeharry 6 – 1, 6 – 0.
In the opening game of the women’s singles Krystal Sukra ousted defending girls’ 18-years-and-under champion Nicola Ramdyhan 6 -3, 6 – 4 in a tough two setter.
Matches were expected to continue last night with another five men’s singles and men’s over 35 singles showdown between Alfred Mentore and Mohammed Rafeek.
