National squash coach Carl Ince and the Guyana Squash Association will have the services of 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games squash gold medalist Nicolette Fernandes to assist with the association’s Summer Camp and the After School programme.
This announcement was made yesterday at the Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue during a media briefing.
Fernandes, the 2009 Sportswoman of the Year and former World ranked No. 27, is Guyana’s premier squash player and with her wealth of knowledge and experience of the sport, the young squash players will surely benefit from her tutoring.
In a brief comment Fernandes said that she was pleased to be giving back to the sport that she loves and hopes to see more players coming forward in the days ahead.
Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, was also at the briefing and stated that he was pleased to see the youths occupying their time by participating in sports activities.
He also stated that there is an excess of 100 Summer sports camps currently underway around the country.
Dr. Anthony also noted that plans are in place to add a badminton and a table-tennis facility at the Woolford Avenue compound which currently houses two squash and several lawn tennis courts.
Also at the briefing was Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, National Squash coach Ince and the Guyana Squash Association’s president Andrew Arjoon.
