Guyana’s netball team left yesterday for Trinidad and Tobago to compete in the Americas Federation of Netball Association (AFNA) tournament with Coach Lavern Fraser–Thomas stating that she was not satisfied with their preparation.
“To be honest I am not totally satisfied and I am not totally satisfied because of our inability to have as many practice sessions as we would have liked because of the unavailability of the venues,” Fraser-Thomas told Stabroek Sport.
She said that permission was sought and granted by the National Sports Commission, but for reasons unknown the Guyana Netball Association was prevented from using both indoor facilities at the National Gymnasium and Cliff Anderson Sport Hall for training purposes.
They were forced to use the tarmac of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for the few weeks they have been in training.
“However, inspite of that I am still looking forward to our participation and I still think and expect the girls to give a very good account of themselves,” Fraser-Thomas said.
The team, she added, was a fairly young one in terms of age, but some of the players are experienced as they have participated in international tournaments.
“So I am hoping that will suffice to give us the kind of performance we need and will be looking forward to.”
The competition, which starts today, will see Guyana coming up against teams from various parts of the Caribbean and North America. This is the first time that Guyana is competing in such a tournament.
