The Guyana Classic, a series of books on the history and culture of Guyana from 1595 to present day, saw six more titles added yesterday and these will be donated to public and school libraries across the country.
The books which are written by Guyanese authors are Selected Poetry- 1999-2010 by Maggie Harris, Unclosed Entrances- Selected Poems by Sasenarine Persaud, Selected Poems by Elly Niland, The New Slavery- An Account of the Indian and Chinese Immigration in British Guiana by Joseph Beaumont, The Short Stories of Guyana by David Dabydeen and British Politics Towards the Amerindians in British Guiana 1803-1873 by Mary N Menezes.
Three hundred and sixty copies of the books—27 titles published—were printed for distribution.
The books were made possible through the voluntary work of writers and academics, except for the technical aspect such as printing.
Minister of Culture, Dr Frank Anthony, addressing the gathering at the Umana Yana yesterday, said he is pleased that an additional 6 books were launched, which will give a good view of Guyana from an historical perspective and many other aspects.
Also present at the launching was Professor David Dabydeen, who is part of the team at Guyana Classic. Dabydeen said focus will be placed on contemporary writings which will include books for children after the completion the volumes by the end of this year. A small amount of the books will be available at Austin’s Bookstore at a cost of $2000 per copy. Funds generated from the sale will go towards the facilitation of similar projects.
