THE VALLEY, Anguilla, CMC – Former NBA star point guard Gary Payton, nicknamed “The Gloveman”, has returned here for the second straight year to conduct the four-day Anguilla Sports Foundation Camp.
Payton, best known for his 13-year spell at the Seattle Supersonics, has been accompanied for the July 16-19 camp by Isaiah Thomas of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, Derrick Morgan of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, along with former NFL Arizona Cardinal, Chris Vincent. According to the organizers, the camp offers an opportunity for the youths of the island to participate in an active, healthy, and educational experience through the sport of basketball. “It is imperative to give the youth of today options that involve being active and social in an environment that promotes discipline and respectful face to face interaction,” said Morgan.
About 150 campers are participating in the event, doubling the number from last year. Several local coaches are expected to give support to the stars in providing the fundamentals of the game, drills, nutritional components and an open forum to discuss life on and off the court.
The camp is being staged at the Viceroy Resort on the island’s west coast.
