Anthony Downes and Andre Lopes defeated the pair of Craig Campbell and Judah Stephney at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Recreational Centre on Tuesday last when matches in the GBTI Open tennis tournament continued.
While many of the juniors have shown their ability to hold their own against some of the seniors in the Open category, Campbell and Stephney could not overcome current men’s singles champion, Downes and his partner, who settled the team of juniors 6 – 1, 6 – 0.
Downes was expected to be back in action on the court last evening when he came up against last year’s Open men’s singles runner up Jeremy Miller.
In the men’s singles Lopes continued his winning streak prevailing over Vijay Jugdeo. Jugdeo put together a 6 – 2 win in the first set but fell to Lopes 2-6, 2-6 in the remaining two sets.
Gilbert Barckoy also got some determined competition from Bishan Dalip, before defeating him 6 – 2, 3 – 6, 6 – 1.
In other men’s singles matches Benedict Sukra scored a straight set 6 – 3, 6 – 4 win over Oswin Coggins while Leyland Leacock defeated Ronald Murray 6 – 3, 6 – 4.
