Kristina Cheeks of the Association Do Shotokan of Guyana (ASKG) was named the top medalist from her Dojo’s at the 2012 International Karate Daigaku (IKD) World Cup held in Toronto, Canada earlier this month.
The 16-year-old Cheeks won medals in all five of her age group events.
She won gold medals in the Team Enbu, Team Kata Bunkai and Individual Kata and silver medals in Team Kata and Individual Kumite.
Also winning multiple medals from the tournament was Alexander Cheeks, Kristina’s brother, who won one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
Leah Shariff also carted off five medals inclusive of two gold, two silver and a bronze while Christy Dey with two gold, one silver and a bronze rounded out the top performers.
Samuel Ming two silver and a bronze; Tariq Dundas one gold and two silver; Shaqueille Agard, one gold and two silver; Theresa Sampat, two silver were also among the medal winners.
The tournament, which was the first World Cup held by the newly formed IKD, attracted over two hundred participants from 10 countries including Jamaica, USA and host country Canada.
In the Boy’s 18-19 Individual events, Lisandro Aldana of Venezuela won gold with 37.1 points to edge out Samuel Ming on 37.0 points with Eric Hing (Guyana Karate College) third with 36.9 points. Nathalie Gibson was unfortunate when she lost out in a rematch in the 20-39 Individual Kata semi-final.
