Second stage of volleyball tourney set for Berbice

The Tradewind Tankers True Champions Volleyball Tournament now moves to the second leg of games which are scheduled for Berbice on July 21 and 28 at the GTM hardcourt in New Amsterdam and the Guysuco Training Centre in Port Mourant respectively.

According to a press release, this weekend’s action will see the six teams which have qualified for the second stage begin battle for the prize monies and ultimately a place in the final stage of the tournament where the top four teams will do battle for the lucrative top prizes.

Already the tournament has shown some shifts of power and surprises since for the first time in many years, defending champions Young Achievers who are now evidently weakened by the absence of star setter, Khemraj Singh, has been beaten by the promising unit from Guysuco Training Centre and were further held to a draw by host Castrol Strikers who in probably the biggest surprise in this year’s tournament managed to dig deep and cart off $20,000  by winning the 2-on-2 version of the first leg.

However, Young Achievers bounced back to easily win the 4-on-4 version by a clear 12 points of the second place Training School Team (TC 1), carting off the $20,000 top prize for their win and TC 1, $10,000 for their second spot.

In addition, another result to note was the upset defeat of Castrol Strikers in the 4-on-4 format by Lusignan, the last team to qualify for the sixes leg of the tournament.

The points standing for the twos and fours were as follows:

Twos:

Castrol Strikers – 99 points, Young Achievers and TC 1 – tied on 98 points, Rollers – 81 points, Port Mourant Jaguars – 79 points and Lusignan – 62 points.

Fours:

Young Achievers – 92 points, TC 1 – 81 points, Rollers – 79 points, Port Mourant Jaguars – 78 points, Castrol Strikers and Lusignan – tied on 63 points.

This weekend Rollers will host the sixes format at their training venue, GTM Court in New Amsterdam and the event is expected to serve off promptly at 9am. All volleyball fans, especially in the very active Berbice association, are urged to come out and witness the best that volleyball has to offer locally. The event is expected to run until around 4pm.
