The second annual Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Summer Programme which was sponsored by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Ming’s Products and Services concluded yesterday at the National Park.
The two-week camp which was coordinated and conducted by Troy Yhip attracted 38 aspiring rugby players from as young as 13-years-old. The purpose of the camp which included 10 girls was to teach each participant the basic aspects of the game such as kicking, passing and tackling.
Yhip noted that the goal of the camp was to get each participant to learn how to tackle instead of playing tag rugby.
“The main aspect of this camp was to see improvements from last year’s camp. We achieved our goal because our main focus was to get them into tackling,” Yhip told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
“That was the most important part, we achieved that goal and we have moved on from the tag rugby stage and we are now into full contact, even the girls are now tackling. Everybody is into full contact now, last year was just tag rugby.” Yhip mentioned that the next step is for the participants to learn the rugby positions and how to scrum.
There was also a day of sports on Thursday which included disciplines such as football, cricket and cycling.
The camp concluded with educational tours to the Lighthouse and the St George’s Cathedral and a lunch at the Coal Pot Restaurant. Yhip also thanked Ming’s Products and Services and Director of Sport Neil Kumar for their support of the camp.
