From Iva Wharton In Trinidad
Last minute decisions proved to be detrimental for Guyana in their match against Canada yesterday in the Americas Federation of Netball Association tournament at the Jean Pierre Complex in the Compound of the Hasley Crawford Stadium, Trinidad and Tobago.
Those decisions caused Guyana to miss a number of opportunities to score goals which could have reduced the margin of defeat as they went under to Canada 23-70.
Guyana had 34 attempts at goal to Canada’s 93.
Guyana was again at a disadvantage where height was concerned as the Canadians were much taller which made it difficult for the Guyanese in their attempts at high and sometimes long passes as the balls were easily intercepted.
Guyana’s team probably possesses the shortest players in the competition since for the other associations selecting players who are above a certain height is a prerequisite.
Meanwhile, the clash of the titans takes place today and favourites to win the tournament, Jamaican is the only unbeaten team.
On Thursday, the Jamaicans thrashed Barbados 65-37 while yesterday, the Bajans rebounded to upset Triniddad winning 59-48 and silencing the shouting and steel ban playing in the process.
The result of today’s match between Jamaica and Trindad will determine the outcome of the championships.
Jamaica, however, seem poised to reclaim the championships from Trinidad after missing last year’s tournament.
Guyana will also be playing two matches tomorrow against Bermuda and Grenada, one game in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
