All members of the public are invited to see the 2001 film Chandni Bar today from 5.30 pm at the Indian Cultural Centre.
Chandni Bar is another of director Madhur Bhandarkar’s award winning films which looks at the lives of the impoverished and marginalised in Mumbai, a press release notes.
Mumtaz — played by Tabu — is a young woman who is forced to become a bar dancer. She marries gangster Potiya (Atul Khulkarni) and has two children. But Mumtaz longs for a better life for her children, away from the bar and the gangsters. Potiya is killed and Mumtaz has to re-organise her life.
The film won four National Awards including Best Actress for Tabu. Tabu also received Best Actress nominations at the Filmfare Awards and Bollywood Awards.
The film’s running time is 150 minutes and admission is free.
