Caribbean Under-15 girls’ singles runner up Chelsea Edghill kept alive her chances of qualifying for the 2014 Junior Olympic Games in China by reaching the quarter finals of the Mexico Open currently in progress in Mexico.
According to a press release from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Edghill defeated Tania Garcia 3-0 to advance to the round of 32 and then defeated Venezuela’s Luisa Cardoza 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4 on Friday.
In the round of 16 Edghill defeated Candela Molero of Argentina 3-1 to advance to the quarter finals of the International Table tennis federation (ITTF) junior circuit tournament. Edghill defeated Molero9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8. Her next opponent is Brazil’s Tathiane Pimentel whom Edghill lost to earlier in the Latin American Cadet Championships.
Edghill also participated in the team events of the ITTF World junior circuit event teaming up with Mexico’s Lourdes Gutierrez.
The pair defeated El Salvador 3-2 with Edghill defeating Andrea Galeano a 3-0 margin.
They also defeated Mexico B by a similar margin with Edghill defeating Maria Espinosa 3-1 and Estefanny Sanchez 3-0.
They then lost 3-0 to Venezuela but qualified for the quarterfinals where they lost to a combined team of Ecuador and Peru in the quarter finals.
Lewis is accompanied by her coach, former junior Caribbean champion Idi Lewis.
