The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has given the go ahead for water taxis to install navigation lights on their vessels so that they can operate a 24-hour service in light of the Demerara Harbour Bridge being temporarily out of commission, GINA reported this evening.
This measure comes as a result of a temporary pontoon which was installed to allow for maintenance works to be executed at the Bridge, sinking this morning, which resulted in the structure being submerged between span 60 and 61.
Minister of Public Works Robeson Benn, in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) indicated that the maintenance team of the Bridge will continue to work tirelessly to resolve the situation.
However, they will have to contend with the high tide.
“MARAD officials will be on both the Stabroek (Georgetown) and Vreed-en-Hoop (Region Three) stellings during the night to ensure there is order and smooth operations by water taxis,” the Public Works Minister told GINA.
He apologised to commuters and members of the business community who are affected and assured that they will be doing all in their power to bring speedy relief.
