Guyana’s female team captain Mary Fung-A-Fat won her fourth Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Caribbean title last night at the Liguanea Club Kingston Jamaica after defeating teammate Ashley deGroot.
Degroot’s dreams of claiming a Junior CASA title were wiped away as Fung-A-Fat raced ahead to a straight-game win to affirm her dominance at the regional level. After both ladies won their semi-final encounter, the Guyanese coaching staff could relax and watch two teammates go at it for individual glory as though it was a domestic match.
Having won all of the head-to-head encounters against deGroot this year, Fung-A-Fat was highly favoured to win and the match was without surprises. Having clinched the top two seeds and validated this by making it to the final, the Guyanese Under 19 duo should be very confident as they enter the girls’ team tournament which begins today.
Their dominance in that category is reminiscent of five time Junior CASA Champion Keisha Jeffrey and two-time champion Ashley Khalil who played in the Under 19 final last year that was won by Jeffrey. Apart from winning the national under 19 title this year, Fung-A-Fat was also the runner up to Nicolette Fernandes in the Women’s category of the 2010 Digicel Caribbean Championships earlier this month.
