The banks in Linden remain closed yesterday and some residents complained that they were unable to withdraw money from ATM machines in the community.
At press time last night Republic Bank costumers were able to withdraw money after it rectified the situation. Stabroek News has been unable to ascertain to what extent customers of the New Building Society (NBS) and Citizens Bank have been affected.
Several Republic Bank customers had told this newspaper that they were unable to access their accounts at the machines which were apparently out of money. This newspaper was told that this had been the situation for a few days.
When contacted, the bank’s Communications Manager Michelle Johnson confirmed that ATMs at Linden were temporarily out of order, while noting that the problem occurred earlier yesterday. She said that two of the machines were back in operation.
“Republic Bank will continue to keep its ATMs operable as far as the circumstances permit. We shall also continue to monitor the state of affairs to determine our best approach,” Johnson said.
Efforts to contact officials of the other two banks were unsuccessful. NBS does not have ATM machines, but customers who have accounts there would be unable to access their accounts since the bank is closed.
