The Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) is scheduled to re-open to light traffic tomorrow morning, General Manager Rawlston Adams said today.
It won’t be back in service today for light vehicular traffic as had been originally expected.
Adams made the announcement at a press conference on the DHB. He said that works crews were last night able to lift the section of the bridge that collapsed but further works were restricted because of the tide. He added that during the course of this evening, when the tide rises, they will be able to install the permanent pontoon so as to facilitate light traffic by early tomorrow morning.
He said that they will also be working with minibus operators to have them transport passengers from Georgetown to the High Span of the bridge and they will then be able to walk across the bridge to West Demerara.
A section of the bridge collapsed sometime around 6:45 am yesterday morning leaving hundreds of passengers stranded on the bridge and also causing mayhem at the Vreed-en-Hoop and Georgetown ferry stellings.
