UN commends gov’t decision to set up Linden Inquiry

The United Nations System (UNS) in Guyana yesterday commended the government’s decision to set up a Commission of Inquiry into the shooting to death of three men at Linden last week.

In a statement issued yesterday expressing condolences to the families of the three men,  the UNS said it deeply regretted the loss of life, which took place in the context of ongoing protests against higher electricity tariffs. It extended wishes for a speedy recovery to all those who were injured.

“The UNS commends the decision of the Government of Guyana to set up a Commission of Inquiry into the protests and deaths. The UNS further welcomes the prompt action of the Government of Guyana in convening talks with the opposition regarding the matter. The UNS urges all concerned to move forward expeditiously in the spirit of reasoned dialogue to ensure that the situation does not escalate, a return to normalcy at the earliest, and that an agreeable and sustainable solution is reached on the issues underlying the current situation,” the statement said.

“The UNS pledges its continued commitment and availability to work in partnership with the Government and the people of Guyana.”
