Defending champions Georgetown are in a must win situation when they face front runners Rupununi in the final game of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Inter-Association women’s football competition at the Georgetown Football Club ground this afternoon from 5pm.
Rupununi leads the point’s standings of the five team league tournament with nine points followed by Bartica and Georgetown on seven, Berbice with three and West Demerara in the cellar without a point. A draw in the game will be enough for Rupununi to win the competition. In the latest rounds of matches Rupununi won twice to climb to the top of the standings.
Last Friday at the GFC ground they mauled West Demerara 6-1 with Kelisa Leonard and senior national player Sonia Griffith scoring two goals each. Leonard netted in the 16th and 51st minutes and Griffith in the 53rd and 78th minutes. The other scorers were Samantha Daniels in the fourth minute and Murisa Vanlong in the 10th minute.
West Demerara’s lone scorer was diminutive forward Abiola Heywood in the 35th minute. On Sunday also at the GFC ground, Rupununi won their second encounter a 7-1 thrashing of Bartica. Rupununi led 1-0 at half time. Vanlong led the scoring this time slamming home a hat-trick of goals in the 36th, 54th and 56th minutes while national U20 and U16 Lady Jags player Urselene Primus scored twice in the 66th and 86th minutes.
