A 29-year-old policeman accused of allowing a prisoner to escape from custody was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail after appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation against Kevin Bobb is that on July 18 at the Brickdam lock-ups, being an agent of the State, in whose lawful custody Naitram Persaud was placed, he allowed him to escape.
The policeman denied the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Attorney Patrice Henry who represented the accused said that at the time of the incident, Bobb was attending to the prisoner when he [Bobb] was called away by his superior to be given further instructions.
According to the attorney, it was during this time that Persaud made his escape bid but counsel quickly pointed out that the prisoner has since been rearrested.
Responding to the court’s enquiry whether his client had been interdicted since the incident, Henry said no, noting that he had worked as recently as Monday.
Henry, in a successful application for his client to be admitted to bail, stated that Bobb has no previous convictions, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating with police investigations.
Bobb resides at 1204 Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, and has been a member of the Guyana Police Force for the past six years.
The prosecution had no objections to the attorney’s bail application.
The matter will be called again on September 12 for statements.
