After taking down Trinidad and Tobago by a 3-2 margin yesterday, Guyana’s girls team is just one team victory away from winning Guyana’s seventh consecutive girls team title at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Team Championships at the Liguanea Club Jamaica.
The girls’ team tournament has been played using the round robin format since there are only six competing nations in the tournament this year. The teams are Guyana, Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Barbados. The Golden Arrowhead Girls have managed to stay undefeated in their first four matches and the last task on the path to becoming seventh-time Caribbean girls team champions is completing a victory against Jamaica today. Jamaica had lost to Trinidad earlier in the tournament so Guyana is likely (victories in games would have to be tabulated) to retain the title even if they lose to Jamaica.
Guyana won their first three matches in the encounter against the twin island republic to clinch their fourth win before Trinidad and Tobago managed to salvage some pride with two consolations wins. Girls U15 runner up Larissa Wiltshire defeated Faith Gillezeau convincingly in straight games (3-0), while U19 CASA champion and first string Mary Fung-A-Fat remained spotless by taking apart Talia Abdool also in three games. Second string in the U19 category Ashley deGroot also made light work of Emily Farah winning by the 3-0 margin. Trinidad and Tobago’s two-time girls U17 champion got the better of Guyana’s four-time Junior CASA champion
Victoria Ajoon once again, but this time Arjoon went down in four games. Girls U13 campaigner Rebecca Low was also defeated by Marie Claire Barcant 3-1. Apart from being on its way to winning a seventh consecutive girls team title, Guyana can win its eight straight overall team title depending on the final playing of the boys team, that has so far made it to the semi-final round of the tournament.
