Abusive T&T husband on family vacation to undergo counseling

A Trinidadian who came to Guyana for vacation with his wife and children yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry accused of  unlawfully assaulting his wife.

Ramlall Baichand, whose local address is 18 Howes Street, Charlestown, accepted that on July 23 at Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Solini Boodhoo, his wife.

The prosecution’s facts stated that abuse in the relationship is ongoing.

The court heard that on the day in question, the defendant and his wife were in the Passport Office building  when he told her that “one rubbing [a blow] was awaiting her outside.”

He dealt her a cuff to the chest when they were out of the building, and she later reported the matter and her husband was arrested and charged.

“Me and my wife had a lil argument. I didn’t mean to cuff her. It wasn’t really a cuff, it was a shove,” the Trinidadian told the court.

Baichand said that he was sorry for his actions and that it would not happen again.

The court ordered that the defendant undergo counseling with the Ministry of Human Services.

He was ordered to return to court on July 30 for a report on the counseling sessions.

Baichand and his family are scheduled to return to Trinidad on August 23.
