The article ‘Harbour bridge reopens to light traffic,’ in the Thursday, July 26, 2012 edition of the Stabroek News, incorrectly quoted Minister of Transport Robeson Benn as saying that although the Demerara Harbour Bridge officials knew that the temporary support system of the bridge was weak, they allowed heavy duty vehicles to traverse. Benn has reiterated that he stated that after the original pontoon was stolen and damaged from the harbour bridge, an older support pontoon was used and necessary weight adjustments were made at the facility. He added that the bridge collapsed after two speeding sand trucks simultaneously passed the area and shifted the joining pontoons. Stabroek News regrets the error and apologises to Minister Benn.
