The Demerara Cricket Club defeated the touring side from New York, Atlantis Cricket Club, by five runs in a thrilling finish at the club’s ground in Queenstown on Wednesday.
With six runs required for victory off the final ball skipper Christopher Barnwell held on to a ball which went miles into the air, struck by Atlantis’ Ron Andrews.
DCC batted first as they did on Monday last and compiled 8 for 114 in a game reduced to 13 overs once again due to wet conditions.
On a wet wicket three batsmen made ducks for DCC before 39 from Paul Wintz down the order gave them a good score.
Andrew Lyght Jr. carried on his good form from the first game, making 29 with four sixes while Wintz struck six as the heavy outfield slowed the ball when played along the ground.
In the end DCC won by five runs as Atlantis finished on 109 for 4. The Atlantis chase started slowly as they scored just 11 runs after 4 overs as Paul Wintz and Barnwell kept things tight up front, with Barnwell almost picking up a hat trick in the process.
The Atlantis innings received impetus from Ronald Andrews who struck five sixes and a four in an entertaining knock of 40 which took the host team to the brink of victory.
With 26 required from the last two overs, Andrews was dropped by Derwin Christian off Barnwell and the ball raced away for four, after he remained scoreless in the first three deliveries. He then struck a six off the last ball to bring the target down to 16 from the last over.
The last over was entrusted to Taralva Scipio, who was struck for a six over cover but kept his composure as Andrews was caught by Barnwell off the final delivery, with Atlantis requiring six to win.
The match marked the final event of the Demerara Cricket Club’s 100th Anniversary Celebrations and the presentation ceremony were graced by a few of the club’s legends, including Roger Harper and Clive Lloyd who made brief remarks at the conclusion of the game.
