A 20-year-old porter died yesterday after the truck he was travelling in capsized on the Cuyuni Road, crushing him in the process.
Orin Hutson, of 2184 20th Street, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital around 6:30 pm.
Hubert Thomas, who was in the tray of the truck along with Hutson and about 15-20 other men, said that the vehicle was at the time transporting empty diesel drums from the interior. He said that it was as they were making their way down a narrow hill that they noticed another vehicle approaching. Thomas said that the truck driver opted to pull into the corner, giving the other vehicle adequate space to pass when the truck toppled to its side. He noted that Hutson had been sitting on the side that hit the ground.
“A cruiser went in front of we, all I notice, the truck driver tek the road corner and the truck turn pon the side and he get pin down cause its that same side he went sitting on,” Thomas told Stabroek News at GPH yesterday.
