German Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Stefan Schlϋter, yesterday, handed over a quantity of sporting equipment to the Deaf Association of Guyana (DAG) at the David Rose Special School.
The donation included volleyballs, footballs and table tennis gear and the estimated cost of the package is US$5,000. DAG had requested the donation from the German Honorary Consul in Guyana, Ben ter Welle, as a part of its programme to introduce sports into some special schools.
Ambassador Schlϋter said that when he received the request from the Honorary Consul he immediately forwarded it to Berlin, Germany since he saw it as of great importance to the development of children with special needs. He added that the German government will continue to support the people of Guyana to ensure stronger ties and better development.
He said he hopes the government and private stakeholders come on board and to ensure the development of the playfields at the various special schools.
DAG is targeting four special schools—the David Rose School and schools on the East Bank of Demerara, New Amsterdam, Berbice and Linden—to introduce sporting activities to boost the development of the students there.
The donation was made at DAG’s summer camp at the David Rose Special School and is expected to benefit some 60 students with special needs.
