Drayton lead Red Cherry chess tourney

Junior chess player Anthony Drayton is in the lead after 12 rounds of the
inaugural Red Cherry Ladder chess tournament following the completion of matches on Thursday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street.

Drayton 30 points, leads former national chess champion Kriskal Persaud by one point while reigning national champion is on 27 points.

Sponsor of the Red Cherry chess tournament and former player Loris Nathoo, left along with Taffin Khan, Anthony Drayton and Kriskal Persaud following last Thursday’s competition.

The much improved junior player Saeed Ali is fourth with 25 points after scoring an upset win over Khan when the tournament commenced last Sunday.

Drayton received a cash prize, a trophy and Red Cherry voucher.

Khan also defeated young Saeed Ali who scored an upset victory over him on Sunday last when the tournament commenced.

Following the completion of 36 matches, the top four players will be involved in a play-off scheduled for August 11.

The tournament resumes to day at the same venue when another six matches would be contested. Players will be allowed 15 minutes each on the clock as another phase in the fast paced tournament gets underway. They will challenge each other once again to score wins and remain on the chess ladder in preparation for the final.

A cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded plus a Red Cherry voucher of the same value to the winner.
