A 23-year-old man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend at their workplace was on Friday ordered by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to undergo counselling and return to court on September 27 for sentencing.
Davindra Lalchand of 31 New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, accepted that on July 26 at Georgetown he unlawfully assaulted Talishwattie Danraj.
Presenting the facts of the case, Police Corporal Simone Payne said that on the day in question the two were at work at Lens located on Sheriff Street when the incident occurred.
The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court heard that the complainant was ascending the stairs when the defendant held on to her hand and she became afraid and screamed.
She then reported the matter to the police and Lalchand was arrested and charged.
When given a chance to speak, the defendant said that he and Danraj were in a relationship for the past three years.
He said that she was going up the stairs when he held on to her hand because he wanted to tell her something. He said that when he held on to her, “she get a dig or something.”
When asked if the relationship had been severed, the defendant responded in the affirmative.
The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being admitted to bail.
After hearing the case, the presiding magistrate ordered the defendant to undergo counselling sessions with the Ministry of Human Services and to return to court on September 27 for sentencing.
Additionally, the defendant was placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the outcome of the matter and was ordered to coexist while at work with the complainant.
