The Assemblies of God Church, at Clonbrook, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was broken into some time on Sunday night and thieves carted off a host of items, including the church’s communion wine.
The incident occurred some time after 9 pm on Sunday after members of the church secured the building and left.
The thieves removed the lock from the glass door at the side of the church to gain entry into the building and removed 4 speaker boxes, 1 mixing board, 1 amplifier, 4 mikes, electrical cords, 3 gas bottles – 2 with gas, 1 large bottle grape juice, an ice pitcher, water cooler, keyboard and some cash from the church’s collection.
Pastor of the church, Shawn Wilson, said he was not around when the discovery was made by his daughter, Sharlene Wilson, but learnt from his wife about what transpired over the telephone.
In relating what transpired, his wife, Yonette Wilson, said that their daughter had gone to the church to take off the lights in the building and retrieve a phone charger around 6.15 am when she discovered that an office in the church was ransacked. She said her daughter became alarmed and went to inform her. Yonette added that she, in the company of other members, went to the church to investigate and found it ransacked. A search was conducted and the items were discovered missing.
Pastor Wilson said that when he got home he went to the church where he too discovered the items missing as well as the lock on the side door. He said, “I don’t see the reason why people would attack an institution that gives help to the community and tries to put people’s lives in order.” The matter was reported to the police who are carrying out their investigations
