In a return friendly encounter between Guyana and Suriname, a Suriname junior draughts team is set to arrive tomorrow while their senior team arrives Saturday for a Goodwill series against their local counterparts.
According to president of the local association Jairam, the visit is part of bilateral relations between the respective associations of both countries.
Jairam said the two countries will vie for trophies donated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport adding that either Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony or Director of Sport Neil Kumar will be on hand at the opening.
Competition will commence on Friday and will be played for five days (Inclusive of Friday) starting at 6.30pm each day.
The tournament will be staged at the Guyana National Stadium Providence.
“The aim of the visit is to apart, from spreading the game, play for a trophy sponsored by the Ministry of Sport,” Jairam told Stabroek Sport on Saturday.
Trophies will be awarded to winners of both the junior and senior divisions.
Last October, Suriname defeated Guyana in Suriname winning the best of four encounter by three matches to one.
Guyana‘s Jairam had played unbeaten in that tournament. While last year’s tournament only involved senior players, this year’s tournament will see the advent of the best junior players in the two countries.
And, in an effort to gain some measure of revenge in the senior division the local association has named a strong side which includes Jairam, Khemraj Pooranmall, Wayne Forde, Mark and Orin Braithwaite, Carlton Simon and Mitra Persaud.
The Suriname delegation is unknown but Stabroek Sports understands that James Ramlall will be managing that delegation.
Meanwhile in a first to two wins series played saturday between Pooranmall and Wilbert Freeman to help in the selection process and held at the Minefield Draughts Club, Aubrey Barker Street South Ruimveldt, Pooranmall defeated Freeman 2-0 with four drawn games.
The match was sponsored by Forde, who is the Managing Director of Oasis Water.
