(Trinidad Express) Police detained 40 people including women and children yesterday afternoon in the Cunupia area for engaging in the illegal sport of cockfighting.
Police said that around 2 p.m. a team of officers from the Cunupia Police Station swooped down on a house located at Lachoes Trace, Cunupia, where the people were seen gathered urging their respective roosters (a male chicken) to kill the other.
The police said that most of those arrested will be charged with assembling for the purpose of gambling and cruelty to animals.
Cockfighting was banned in Trinidad and Tobago several years ago and involves two roosters placed in a pen in a fight to the death while lookers-on place bets.
Meanwhile in the Northern Division the police seized a total of six guns yesterday during an exercise in the Northern Division.
According to the head of the Division Supt David Abraham who spearheaded the operation the exercise began around 9 p.m. on Wednesday and ended 9 a.m. yesterday.
Police said the weapons were seized in Carapo, Bon Air Gardens Arouca and Dinsley Tacarigua.
Those arrested are expected to be charged today and will appear in the Tunapuna Magistrates’ Court between today and Friday.
