Two persons suffered severe injuries and are in a serious condition at the hospital after the car they were travelling in, collided with a taxi on the Prospect, East Bank Demerara public road yesterday morning.
Injured are 25-year old Charwin Benjamin, who sustained a fractured neck, a broken arm and foot and his cousin, Kurtis Benjamin, who sustained a broken arm and foot. Both men, of Lot 1 Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, also suffered injuries to the head and were bleeding profusely.
According to reports, the accident occurred at sometime around 7am when the car which was being driven by Kurtis, collided with a taxi. According to an eyewitness, he was in his yard when he saw the car which was heading south, speeding along the main road. “All I see is this car moving fast, fast and then I hear badam so I run out and when I look up the road, the car deh in the corner and another taxi deh in the other corner,” he said.
The man added that after the collision, persons immediately rushed to the scene and got the duo out of the vehicle and rushed them to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where they received medical treatment. They were subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where they were admitted.
Another eyewitness, Michelle Fernando, told Stabroek News that she was in her kitchen when she heard the collision and immediately rushed out to render assistance. “When I run out and see the two man in the car, dem head and so been buss up and them been a bleed bad,” she recounted. The woman said that the duo was rushed to the hospital while the police were summoned. Fernando said that after the police arrived, they conducted their investigations and took the driver of the taxi into custody along with the two vehicles.
At the GPH, Charwin’s mother told Stabroek News that they received a call informing them of the accident sometime around 8:30am and immediately rushed to the hospital. “When we get the call them tell we that Charwin been in an accident with Kurtis and we rush down to the Diamond Hospital and then them transfer them to here (GPH),” she recalled.
At the time when Stabroek News spoke to the woman, the injured men were undergoing x-ray examinations and were scheduled for a head scan to determine the extent of their head injuries.
