George misses century as T&T restrict Windwards

PINE, Barbados, CMC – Opener Keone George compiled narrowly missed out on a century but Windward Islands were dismissed for a modest total on the opening day of the second round of matches in the Regional Under-19 three-day Championship here yesterday.

George scored 94 as the Windwards, invited to bat by Trinidad & Tobago, were dismissed for 183 at the Pine Basin.
In reply, T&T were 29 for one at stumps.

They lost Brian Christmas who was neatly taken at second slip by Jerlani Robinson off pacer Ray Jordan for five but the in-form Jeremy Solozano was undefeated on 18 and Andy Gobin, two.

Earlier, the Windwards lost their first two wickets via the run out route to slip to 36 for two.

The left-handed George and Taryck Gabriel, who hit 33, then fashioned a 60-run stand for the third wicket to ensure the Windwards reached the lunch interval at 85 without further loss.

However, fast- bowler Tevin Robertson made the breakthrough when Gabriel pulled a short delivery to square-leg. His knock contained six fours from 80 balls in 75 minutes.

George, meanwhile, batted for a shade less than four hours, faced 236 balls and struck four fours and two sixes.

Roland Cato and Horlice Blair fell within one run of each other with Cato caught at cover off left-arm spinner Jovan Ali (2-38) and Blair edging behind off Anthony Simmons (3-61), who bowled a mixture of off and leg-breaks.

George continued to bat solidly despite wickets falling around him, content on pushing the ball into the spaces on the large outfield in his chanceless innings.
The Windwards went to the tea interval on 145 for six with George on 72 and Kenneth Dember, two.

With wickets tumbling afterward, George tried to push on, striking a six over long-on and a four through the off-side.

However, he eventually perished when he pulled a short delivery from left-arm spinner Nairon Motilal to Ali at short mid-wicket to end his vigil.
