The Essequibo Coast family that cremated the wrong corpse on Tuesday will burn the right body today.
Meanwhile, the family of the man who was mistakenly cremated yesterday performed the last rites with the ashes they collected from the other family.
On Wednesday the family of 83-year-old Adventure village Pandit Harry Persaud was shocked when they went to the mortuary to prepare their dead relative for cremation only to find that he had been mistaken for another man and had already been cremated.
The corpse of another man, 82-year-old Seepersaud of Reliance who died last week had been in the place of Persaud’s. His relatives had dressed and cremated the Pandit on Tuesday with what they stated was money pooled by several relatives as they are poor.
Yesterday they told Stabroek News that the funeral parlour had waived corpse storage fees. They however will once again take to the pyre to have their relative cremated and were grateful for assistance rendered by residents who read the story.
The Persauds yesterday collected the ashes of the Pandit and held a religious service for him after which they performed Hindu rites. They said that they were still devastated by the mix up but at least now were given closure.
Officials from the Suddie Hospital Funeral Parlour told Stabroek News that they will be more vigilant when persons are retrieving corpses as to not have a repeat.
