Dear Editor,
The excesses of this regime never seem to amaze anyone any more. When the PPP took office in 1992 they began a campaign of weeding out those members of boards who were receiving what they termed “excessive compensation.“ I remember how unprofessional they were when they removed the Chairman and Finance Director of Guyana Stores. The Chairman (one of Guyana’s best) was booted out. This gentleman went on to lead a very successful private firm.
We have heard of the “super salaries” being paid to party members, but the one that hit me the most is the money that GuySuCo has to pay for the US based chairman. What we did not ask, and obviously no answer was given was, did GuySuCo pay for this gentleman’s travel and accommodation during the last five years when he was only a member of the board? If so how shameful can this government get, and what did GAWU have to say about this?
During the budget debate I had asked the parliamentary opposition not to approve any funds for GuySuCo unless a professional board and management team was put in place. As usual, this fell on deaf ears. When will we know how much GuySuCo had to pay for this overseas based director and when will the next board meeting be?
Unless Guyanese are prepared to stand up in unison and demand that this nonsense stop, the PPP will continue to take our country down the path of no return.
Yours faithfully,
Charles Sugrim
